Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.
Beginner Moves
Move 1 = First Move Move 2 = Pushspin Move 3 = Sway
Intermediate Moves
Move 1 = Yo Yo Turn Out = Step back right to right. Both step in as you would in a normal Yo Yo – men taking your right hand up near your left shoulder, but as you do so change hands so you are now man’s left to lady’s right by the man’s left shoulder. Men take a step behind your lady with your right foot, pivoting round to your right changing sides, raising your left hand in a big arc over the lady’s head – turning her in a clockwise direction. Face. Return. Step back.
Move 2 = Manspin Combo = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Manspin. Catch right to right, but also catch left to left over the top of your right hand. Step in to return the ladies with both hands. Lower both the lady’s hands into the man’s right hand – Men let go with your left. Like a catapult pull down and raise both the lady’s hands. Men lean forward but do not offer your spare hand. Men step back turning to your right taking your right hand out to the right at waist level to wrap the ladies into a sway position albeit with both the lady’s hands by her right hip. Sway backwards while men offer their left hand and ladies take hold with their left hand. Sway forwards. Men raise your left hand to turn the ladies out. Step back with a crossed handhold (left hand over the top.)
Move 3 = Accordion American Spins = Step back right to right, but also offering your left hand over the top – ladies take hold. Men step forwards to begin to swap sides as you take your right hand out to the right at waist level making your partner step forward in front of you. As you continue to swap sides men pull back and let go with your right hand at waist level to spin your lady clockwise whilst still keeping hold with your left hand overhead. Catch right to right, still keeping hold with your left hand raised. Men raise both hands to return the ladies anti-clockwise. Lower and step back. Both bounce in and uncross your hands. Both step back to face with a normal double handhold.
Move 4 = Basket into Catapult = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Basket. Men cradle your lady forwards as normal, but as you do – raise your left hand (with the lady’s right) up onto her left shoulder. Men push with your left hand on the lady’s shoulder as you pull with your right hand at waist level to make your lady turn 1/2 turn to her right to face you. Keep hold with both hands as men raise your right hand out to the right and then over the lady’s head to turn her anti-clockwise. When the ladies come round to face, men place your right hand on your left shoulder as you raise your left hand over your head and turn half a turn to your right underneath – once your back is facing your lady, men lower your left onto your right shoulder. Men let go with both hands, and step forward offering both hands out behind you like a Catapult. This move now finishes like a normal Catapult – men step back to the right, leading your lady into your left hand side. Spin the ladies clockwise. Catch right to right. Return. Step back.
